Save Masjid's ONLY

Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar backs reservation for Muslims - The Hindu

New Delhi, June. 1 (PTI): Actress-turned-activist Shabana Azmi, today termed as "unfortunate" the opposition from certain sections, including political parties like the BJP, to the reservation for Muslim students in the Aligarh Muslim University, saying the move was aimed at benefiting deserving students.

"This step will ultimately benefit 2000 deserving students," Azmi said.
"It is unfortunate that it has been given a communal colour. It should not have had any political ramification," she told reporters here on the sidelines of the launch of a book `Jama Masjid, Call of the Soul'.

Speaking on the occasion, noted scriptwriter, lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar, sought adequate measures to preserve ancient monuments of the country.

"Jama Masjid has been witness to several important happenings of India's history. It was very much a part of the mutiny of 1857. It is our duty to preserve all monuments like Jama Masjid," he said.

Authored by N L Batra, an engineer by profession, the book brings into light some unknown facts about the 17th century monument.

"I have tried my best to document the Jama Masjid in my book. A long association with this great monument has given me a chance to know it well," he said.
